Since graduating from Curtin University in 2003, Therese Howard's painted bronze pieces have been eagerly collected both in WA and the Eastern States . Her technique is labour intensive and time-consuming: a single piece may take days or weeks to complete depending upon its complexity. Although, traditionally, bronze is polished or a patina applied, her interest is more with its contemporary potential and the irony of the painted surface.

She writes: “All my works.... refer in some way to a particular aspect of Japanese aesthetics. Balance, beauty and in some cases simplicity are key elements, although these have been applied to create cast works which directly reflect our own Australian culture and environment. The objects for Still Life were gathered mostly from the WA shoreline and the pomegranate came from a farm down south. The rabbits, bugs bowls, and blossoms came from my home and local neighbourhood and were used to create the moulds for casting”.
