Thurle Wright collects old books, maps, advertisements, newspapers and charts, and playfully reworks them to form new variations on the linguistic grid. Dislocted, yet familiar flashes of text and image, intricately folded, woven or stitched, are intended to dra w the viewer in; to m a ke their own connections, to question a ccepted codes, to read between the lines.
Born in Zimbabwe , Thurle studied modern languages and literature both in Australia and the UK , before specialising in visual art. She has a BA (Hons) Textiles, from Goldsmiths College , University of London , and now carries out her art practice in both London and Perth . Over the la st year she has undertaken two residencies in Western Australia , at Guildford Grammar School in 2007, and most recently at Central T.A.F.E. Following her exhibition at Gallery East she will be showing a new body of work at Foyles, Charing Cross Road ; London's largest and most famous book shop.
