Kenrei-mon-in Leaping into the Sea, from the series, “Thirty six Good and Evil Beauties” (Zen-aku sanjūroku bijin), published by Morimoto Junzaburō 1876                                                            

 In this series, the most accomplished of Kunichika’s depictions of women and the most superbly carved and printed, Kenrei-mon-in, the mother of the child Emperor, Antoko, leaps into the sea
clutching  her child in an attempt to escape capture after the Taira’s  defeat by the Minamoto during the naval battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185
