Dramatic depiction of a battle during the Sino-Japanese War. Japanese troops rush up the hillside at Ryueifuku to overcome Chinese gunners, battling hand to hand with the enemy. At lower left, two combatants are locked in struggle, the Japanese soldier raising his gun above his head like a club. A Chinese soldier tumbles backwards behind him, his pigtail fluttering in the wind. Clouds of smoke surround the Chinese troops at left, and orange shots streak across the valley where additional Japanese charge ahead under the direction of an officer on horseback.

A handsome composition with fine calligraphic line work in the trees.

Collections: Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf Collection, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts.
