Toyohara CHIKANOBU 1838–1912

First Horse Day, from the series, Ladies in Chiyoda Palace (Chiyoda no on-omote),

published 1895      

Actors gathering outside a main hall before a special performance of the New Year on the 'First Horse" day of the second month.

A young man on the left holds a falcon on his arm, and is accompanied by a beautiful woman dressed as the Wisteria Maiden.

At right actors in the roles of historical figure, Benkei carries a bell and wears a monk's costume, while the red faced demon in front of him hs been vanquished by Aotake Goro who carries a giant arrow.
