Personal Space: Defined
BRENDA RIDGEWELL's reputation as a leading jewellery maker has led to an impressive exhibition history, both nationally and internationally. Personal Space: Defined will be only her third major solo exhibition in Western Australia over the last 15 years and as such, is of considerable significance. The exhibition showcases body pieces of extraordinary elegance and beauty, using precious and semi precious materials to reflect the tenacity and preciousness of life itself.
BRENDA RIDGEWELL's work explores the intimate personal space on the human body: the space reserved for a lover or a child. Her exploration of these intimate spaces has led to a group of work that touches and moves away from the body, exploring the space both on and beyond the body surface. The works are developed through a system of units constructed in varying manners to develop sculptural forms for the body. Repetitive elements are utilized as a constant reminder of the repetition within our lives and bodies: the repetition that makes us all similar yet nor identical.
BRENDA RIDGEWELL is the Director of Jewellery and 3D Design at Curtin University and has been the recipient of many prestigious awards. She has exhibited her work throughout Australia , as well as in the USA , Japan and the UK . Her work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of Western Australia, among others.
