Depiction of the Meiji Emperor returning to Tokyo in triumph in May 1895 following the end of the Sino-Japanese War.  The street is lined with cheering citizens as the imperial carriage and officers on horseback make their way through a triumphal arch at Hibiya covered with greenery and decorated with Japanese flags. The spectators wave banners, and fireworks explode in showers of sparks overhead. The electrical poles and wires along the edge of the road at right prominently display the technological advances taking place during the Meiji era.
